Cyril
was born in Colwyn Bay in 1915 and played as a goalkeeper for
several local clubs before being spotted whilst playing for
Llandudno, by the legendary Major Frank Buckley who signed him
for Wolves in 1937.
Cyril played a number of games for Wolves, in a career that
was disrupted by the Second World War, he helped the club win
the Staffordshire Cup Winners Cup in 1937-38 and the Wartime
League (North) Cup in 1942. During the War Cyril also guested
for other Northern League Clubs and played whilst in the Army
for the Combined Services and for Northern Command. He also
featured in the record 10-1 victory over Leicester City in 1938,
and in 1945 he was one of the two Wolves goalkeepers to play
in the same International match, he featured for Wales and Bert
Williams was in goal for England.
When peace broke out Cyril was transferred to Liverpool for
what was a record-breaking fee of £4,000 at that time. He made
165 first team appearances and helped Liverpool win the League
Championship in the 1946-7 season and appeared in the 1950 F.A.
Cup Final.
Cyril also appeared in eleven wartime internationals for Wales,
before making his full International debut in 1947, in all he
won seven full caps. Cyril played for a number of lower League
clubs before returning to Wolves in 1953 to end his playing
career where he later took up a coaching role.
Cyril lived in Codsall and was well known in the local community,
in his early days he had trained as a Carpenter and this was
the trade he returned to when his playing days were over.
After reading an article in the "Villager" magazine
about Perton and Codsall United, Rita Jefferies remembered having
her Christmas shopping neatly packed away at the local Sainsbury
supermarket by the club youngsters.
Rita, Cyril's daughter, contacted the club to see if she could
help in any way by utilising the memoribilia collected during
her father's playing days.
After further discussions Rita agreed that it would be fitting
to sponsor an "Achievement Award" that would be presented
annually in her father's honour.
At the end of each season the club committee requests all team
Managers to nominate a player from their team, not necessarily
based on how many goals scored, or if they were considered the
best player, but it should be someone who, in their opinion,
has shown the greatest commitment and contribution to
the team's cause. |
